The Anniversary of a Death: How to Get Through the Day
- grief
- anniversary
- coping
Even years later, the date can arrive like a weight. Some people feel the heaviness for days before. This is sometimes called an anniversary reaction, and it is a common part of grief rather than a setback.
Plan a little, not a lot
- Decide ahead whether you want to be alone, with others, or a mix.
- Take the day off or lighten your schedule if you can.
- Let a trusted person know the date so they can check in.
- Keep food, water, and rest on the plan.
Ways to honor them
- Visit a place that mattered to them.
- Cook their favorite meal.
- Light a candle or release a message, as you wish.
- Write them a letter about the year that has passed.
A yearly letter can become a quiet tradition. Start with how to write a letter to someone who died.
If the day feels heavier than expected
Sometimes grief shows up stronger than you planned for, or arrives when you thought you were done. That is explained in delayed grief. Be kind to yourself, and let the feeling move through.
If you would like a private place to say what you are carrying that day, m'oli is open at any hour. It is company and reflection, not therapy, and nothing you write is saved.
